Educational Goal

The objective of the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Systems is to develop people capable of proactively addressing, analyzing and solving current cultural and social problems.

Curriculum Policy

  1. Basic specialty skills
    Students must have acquired, accurately and systematically, wide and deep knowledge necessary for conducting advanced and specialized research.
  2. Research ability
    Students must possess the ability to carry out research single-handedly on today's problems in the specialty fields of humanities and social sciences.
  3. Application ability
    Students must have the ability to use and apply expertise in solving various problems of modern society by understanding society and culture as a single system.
  4. Contribution to society
    Students must be able to transmit own research results to society in general through active exchange of views with other people in their own specialty fields and have qualities as a professional who can support the knowledge-based society of today in various manners.

Cultural Systems Master's Program

Diploma Policy

The Cultural Systems Major confers a master's degree in literature on students who have completed the prescribed curriculum, successfully passed the master's thesis screening and examination and acquired the following abilities:

  1. Basic specialty skills
    Students must have accurately and systematically acquired wide and deep knowledge necessary for doing advanced and specialized research on today's varied cultural phenomena.
  2. Research ability
    Students must have the ability to conduct research single-handedly on today's problems in the specialty fields of humanities.
  3. Application ability
    Students must have the ability to use and apply expertise in solving various cultural problems of modern society by understanding culture as a system.
  4. Contribution to society
    Students must have acquired the ability to transmit own research results to society in general through active exchange of views with other people in the humanities fields and qualities as a professional who can support the knowledge-based society of today in various manners.

Curriculum Policy

The Cultural Systems Major is designed to cultivate students' ability to find the ways to solving real-world problems of cultural phenomena by understanding relations among wide-varying cultural phenomena. To achieve this goal, the major compiles a systematic curriculum described below to provide an environment where students can concentrate on their research with future prospects.

  1. Educational and research fields and domains
    The Cultural Systems Major has three education and research fields, i.e., Human Sciences, Philosophy and History, and International Culture.
    Specifically, Human Sciences, divided into the two domains of Linguistic Sciences and Psychology and Information Sciences, conducts research on the mechanism of human behavior and rules of linguistic performance. Philosophy and History has the two domains of Philosophy and Culture, and History and Culture for comprehensive study of philosophy and history of various regions of the world, using social science methods. International Culture has Asian Cultures and European and American Cultures for research on a wide range of cultural phenomena.
  2. Curriculum
    The curriculum is compiled as follows in order for students to set research subjects and pursue study in each of the above fields.
    The curriculum is compiled in such a manner as to enable students to write unique master's theses by getting eight credits in Special Study, in which students can receive continuous guidance from a tutor, a total of eight credits or more in Special Lectures and Special Seminars, four credits or more in practical information or foreign language subjects and 10 credits or more in electives of the major.

The Social Systems Major confers a master's degree in policy science on students who have completed the prescribed curriculum, successfully passed the master's thesis screening and examination and acquired the following abilities:

  1. Basic specialty skills
    Students must have accurately and systematically acquired wide and deep knowledge needed to carry out specialized research on today's local communities and international society.
  2. Research ability
    Students must have the ability to conduct research on their own on today's problems in the specialty fields of social sciences.
  3. Application ability
    Students must have the ability to use and apply expertise in solving varied problems of local communities and international society by understanding a local community as a composite system.
  4. Contribution to society
    Students must have acquired the ability to transmit own research results to society in general through active exchange of views with other people in the social science fields and qualities as a professional who can support the knowledge-based society of today in various manners.

Curriculum Policy

The curriculum focuses on three types of social systems: the public and business systems that are the basic compound systems forming a local community and the international systems that form an important environment for the community. Under such educational and research setup, the Social Systems Major develops people who can theoretically and practically address various problems of today's local communities and international society.

  1. Educational and research fields and domains The major carries out education and research in the three fields of Public Systems, Business Systems and International Systems.
    • Public Systems
      The field is divided into the two domains of Public Policies and Regional Policies. Students conduct study on administrative problems of today's local communities from a composite viewpoint to acquire knowledge and skills needed to deal with increasingly complex administrative needs.
    • Business Systems
      The field is divided into the two domains of Management and Business Law. Students acquire knowledge necessary for coping with changes in the social environment as well as business administration and legal processing abilities by studying the formulation of strategies and legal policy issues concerning business activities.
    • International Systems
      The field is divided into the two domains of International Relations and International Business and Law. Students conduct research on various international problems from a comprehensive social science viewpoint to obtain knowledge and skills to address a variety of problems arising from the internationalization of local communities.
  2. Curriculum
    The Social Systems Major has the following curriculum that allows students to set research subjects and pursue their study.
    • Special Study (8 credits)
      The center of the curriculum
      A tutor advises students from preparatory research to the completion of a thesis.
    • Required electives (12 credits)
      Specialty subjects centering on the fields closely related to task-oriented research and required common subjects
    • Free subjects (10 credits)
      A category of subjects for acquisition of a wide range of knowledge
