Japanese Studies

We offer two Japan-specific certificate programs for incoming study abroad and exchange students according to their academic needs and language proficiency levels: Japan Studies Program (JSP) and Japanese Studies for advanced learners

Japan Studies Program

JSP is designed for reciprocal exchange students at all language levels enrolled full-time at our partner institutions overseas who wish to study at Yamagata University for a semester or academic year. It features a combination of language study, English-medium courses, and fieldwork. Japanese students also participate in these courses except for language study. At least 150 hours of previous language study is expected of JSP applicants. >More information

Japanese Studies for advanced learners of Japanese

This one-year scholarship-bearing program is for Japanese minors or majors at their home institution with advanced language skills, an equivalent of at least level 2 in Japanese Language Proficiency Test administered by the Japan Foundation. The program offers courses in broad disciplinary areas including Japanese literature, history, linguistics, management and advanced language study. Individuals usually apply for the program along with a MEXT (Japanese government) scholarship either through a Japanese consulate or embassy in the applicant’s home country or through YU that will nominate a recipient candidate(s) of the scholarship after screening all applicants. Individuals are also eligible to apply for the program at YU without applying for the scholarship to be admitted as a fee-paying student. >More information
