【授業概要】

Presentations and research of a current event
・到達目標
World Events Research and Oral Presentations aims to develop students English speaking ability and presentation skills as a way to gain new knowledge of worldwide current events. This will be done by requiring 5 or 6 oral presentations based on newspaper articles and follow-up research. Students will achieve the following goals by the end of the course:

1. gain confidence to speak in English in front of others
2. increase their understanding of English newspapers and media vocabulary
3. increase vocabulary
4. learn to work as team to organize and present new information
5. provide skills for using English in the workplace
6. to increase knowledge of current events outside of Japan
7. to connect their topic with a larger contexts by doing research

【授業計画】
・授業の方法
Students will generally work in pairs and give at least four oral presentations based on a newspaper article of their choice. Students will then study the article and research the topic further outside the classroom. Students will then present their 15-20 minute presentation via Powerpoint or Keynote in front of the classroom. The last five minutes will be for question-answers.
・日程
The pace of the course will depend on student ability. Generally, all students are required to give at least 4 oral presentations by the end of the semester plus one written report on a current events topic. Students are encouraged to use Powerpoint or Keynote as a way to present their topic in an organized and professional manner.

【成績の評価】
・基準
The oral presentation will be graded on your ability to:
1) Develop, research, and organize and present your ideas.
2) How well you achieve each of the 10 category criteria

Each presentation is 50 points
(Presentation scores total / # of presentations) / 250 = Final score %
e.g. (35+42+38+45+40 / 5) / 250 = 80%

*students who fail to attend at least 2/3 of class will receive a "0" for their final grade.

eye contact, voice, gesture, visual aids, information, posture, original research, teamwork, pronunciation, Q/A follow-up.

・学生へのメッセージ
Students are expected to do some individual research on their topic outside class time. The content of this course corresponds approximately to a TOEIC score of 500 or above. Laptop computers are acceptable in class
