This course focuses on the History of English. It will be taught in both English and Japanese and is aimed at students with a good working knowledge of the language.

【授業計画】
・授業の方法
An English reading will be set for homework and the content will be discussed during the seminar. In addition, we will watch and discuss a TV series, in Japanese, on the history of English.

Old English grammar
the development of English spelling
changes in pronunciation (the Great Vowel Shift, etc.)
English in America
English in the Southern Hemisphere
English dialects
‘Black’ English and the slave trade
language standardization

Bring a good dictionary to class. This class will be conducted mainly in English.

・基準
Students will be graded based on their participation in class, their acquisition of knowledge, their level of comprehension, and their acquisition of general skills. 2/3 attendance mandatory.

End-of-Term Presentation: 25%
Term Paper: 30%
Attendance: 20%
