In English A, we will improve our English communication skills and prepare for the TOEIC.

The goal of this class is for students to improve their English communication skills and at the same time improve their score on the TOEIC.

English communication, TOEIC practice

This course corresponds to study objective (D)for students of Biochemical Engineering.

Classes will taught in lecture style with a heavy focus on group activities. Each week, we will both practice using English through a variety of activities and work on practice TOEIC problems.

The first class will consist of a general orientation. Students will be separated into different classes according to their TOEIC score from the previous semester, but may change to another teacher’s class as long as the class is held for their major.
From the second class on, we will review practice TOEIC problems during the first part of class and practice English communication through a variety of fun activities such as reading books and watching movies during the second part of class. There will be a short vocabulary quiz once every two weeks and a writing assignment due every week without a vocabulary quiz. Practice TOEIC problems will also be assigned for homework each week.

Students are expected to actively participate in class each week, complete homework assignments, and take the TOEIC in July. There will be a final exam held at the end of the semester as well.

Students are expected to study for vocabulary quizzes and complete short writing assignments once every two weeks in alteration. In addition, students will be assigned practice TOEIC problems each week for homework.

Student’s score on the TOEIC will account for 30% of their grade and the rest of their grade will be evaluated according to class participation, completion of homework, their score on the weekly vocabulary quizzes, and a final exam.

Grades will be calculated in the following fashion:
Class participation: 30 pts.
TOEIC-IP Score: 30 pts.
Vocabulary quizzes: 10 pts.
Homework assignments: 10 pts.
Final exam: 10 pts.

It is impossible to learn English only from going to class and reading your textbook. If you truly want to learn English, you must spend time every day using English. I suggest that you try to read and listen to English every day and try to keep a daily journal in English. If you only study from your textbook, you will get bored with English very quickly. Also, please try joining English learning activities at the Faculty of Engineering International Center such as English Lunch Chat, Movie Night, and Board Game Night. Do your best to make learning English as fun as possible, so that you will not give up easily!
