【授業の目的】
In English A, you will improve your basic English skills and prepare for the TOEIC.

【授業の到達目標】
The goal of this class is for you to improve your English reading and listening skills and at the same time, improve your score on the TOEIC.

This course corresponds to study objective (D) for students of Biochemical Engineering.

【授業計画】
・授業の方法
Classes will be taught in lecture style. Each week, you will practice reading and listening English and work on practice TOEIC problems.
・日程
The first class will consist of a general orientation. You will be separated into different classes according to your TOEIC score from the previous semester, but you may change to another teacher’s class as long as the class is held for your major.
From the second class on, you will review practice TOEIC problems and work to improve your English reading and listening skills. There will be a short vocabulary quiz every week and a writing assignment due every other week. Practice TOEIC problems will also be assigned for homework every week.

【学習の方法】
・受講のあり方
You are expected to actively participate in class each week, complete homework assignments, and take the TOEIC in July. There will be a final exam at the end of the semester.
・授業時間外学習へのアドバイス
You are expected to study for vocabulary quizzes and complete short writing assignments. In addition, you will be assigned practice TOEIC problems every week for homework.

【成績の評価】
・基準
Your score on the TOEIC will count for 30% of your grade. The rest of your grade will be evaluated based on class participation, homework, vocabulary quizzes, and a final exam.
・方法
Grades will be calculated in the following fashion:
Class participation: 30 pts.
TOEIC-IP Score: 30 pts.
Vocabulary quizzes: 10 pts.
Homework: 10 pts.
Final exam: 20 pts.

・学生へのメッセージ
It is difficult for you to learn English only from going to class and reading your textbook. If you really want to learn English, you must try to use a bit of English every day. There are many ways to learn English, such as watching movies and TV dramas, reading books and newspaper, or listening to music, etc.
You MUST study English in college. At first it will be difficult, but if you try, you will realize that you CAN do it!!
