【授業の目的】
General English places an emphasis on English reading comprehension. In addition, a student’s overall practical English abilities will be developed.

【授業の到達目標】
Students at this level can understand articles containing technical vocabulary about science, lifestyle, culture and social issues. Students can express their opinions using a wide range of vocabulary and a clear logical structure.

【授業計画】
・授業の方法
In this class, students will be encouraged to read for a purpose. They will read a variety of authentic texts as they engage in tasks that include responding to directions, searching for solutions, grouping related content and visuals, and extracting important information. They will focus on reading strategies including predicting, skimming/scanning, and re-reading for better understanding, while also concentrating on vocabulary development and making effective use of dictionaries. Depending upon the task, students will work individually or in small groups.
・日程
Students will spend the first few weeks of the class working on basic reading strategies such as understanding directions, considering vocabulary in context, skimming and scanning, and reading for information, and will then move on to tasks that require them to use a combination of reading strategies. A final exam will be given in Week 14 and returned the final week.

Reading materials may sometimes be provided in advance. In this case, thorough preparation will allow students to get the most out of the upcoming class.

・基準
Grades will be based upon class assignments, quizzes, a final exam, and TOEIC results.

Class assignments and quizzes: 50%
Final exam: 30%
TOEIC: 20%
*Attending a minimum of 2/3 of classes is mandatory and those who fail to do so will be given 0 points for the course.
