In “English for Science and Engineering A,” we will learn fundamental scientific vocabulary as well as practicing English through activities.

The goal of this class is for you to learn some basic scientific vocabulary and to improve your confidence in using English.

Scientific English, Chemical and Mathematical Expressions in English, English communication

It is mandatory to attend at least one English class during your second year at the University. Additional classes are on a voluntary basis. You can choose between Basic Skills, English Communication Skills, English for Science and Engineering, and English Through Multimedia.

Main focus of this class is to learn useful scientific vocabulary. This is the Engineering Faculty, so we will focus on keywords useful for your future in science and engineering. Besides learning new vocabulary, we will read texts, watch short movies and do various activities to improve your English skills in general.

At the beginning of the semester, there will be a general orientation in which you can choose the English course you wish to take. There are 3 different courses available: Basic Skills, English Communication Skills, and English for Science and Engineering.
A TOEIC score of approximately 400 points or higher is recommended (but not required) for attending "English for Science and Engineering".
In English for Science and Engineering, a heavy focus will be on scientific vocabulary, reading scientific texts and watching scientific short movies. Additionally, there will be a variety of interesting activities to improve you conversational English skills and vocabulary range. Main goal is to improve your confidence in using English as well as improving your vocabulary.
There will be a short vocabulary quiz once every two weeks and a writing assignment due every week without a vocabulary quiz. TOEIC will not be the main focus of this class.

You are expected to actively participate in class each week and to complete every homework assignment. Additionally, you are required to take the TOEIC test in June.

Please study for vocabulary quizzes and complete homework assignments once every two weeks in alteration.

Your grade will be evaluated based on class participation, homework, short quizzes, TOEIC and a final exam.

Grades will be calculated in the following fashion:
Homework: 20 pts.
Short quizzes: 20 pts.
Class participation: 20 pts.
TOEIC: 10pts.
Final exam: 30 pts.

English learning can be fun! If you really want to improve your English skills, you should try using it in your daily life: watch movies in English, read books in English, or just try to talk to your friends in English. You can also join the English activities at the Faculty of Engineering International Center such as Daily English Conversation, Movie Night, and Board Game Night. Studying English can be fun, let’s try some interesting ways to improve your English in this class!
