Initiative for the Implementation of the Diversity Research Environment (Collaboration Type)

トップ  >  Greetings

Initiative Overview

                                                                                                            Koji Abe Director

Having being selected for "Initiative for the Implementation of the Diversity Research Environment (Collaboration Type)” subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), our collaborative institutions comprised of Yamagata University, R&D Center of Dai-Nippon Printing Co.Ltd. and Yamagata Prefectural Yonezawa University of Nutrition Sciences set up the Council of Promoting Diversity. And it is my great honor to preside over the council.

This 6-year Initiative aims to improve research capability of women researchers and increase the number of female researchers, above all, those in higher positions through cooperation among three institutions. And it is expected that more organizations will participate in this effort in line with the progress of joint researches.

On the occasion of the launch of this initiative, we invited, in October 2015, Kosuke Takahashi of the MEXT Science and Technology Policy Bureau and Kashiko Kodate who has long been involved in supporting female science researchers, and in February 2016, Naoki Atsumi, team leader of the Cabinet Office Task Force for Declining Birthrate, and Elizabeth Pollitzer, expert adviser on gender issues to the European Commission, to deliver their speeches, which has encouraged us to do more in promoting this initiative.

We also organized an external evaluation committee composed of 6 members who were recommended by each institution. Hopefully they will assess this effort, improve and make it more effective and give us advice on how to sustain it when the grant is over.

With female researchers-led 8 joint researches established in 2015, research grant has started. And a system to help female researchers keep a balance between life events and studies has been put in place. Details are described in this report, so please refer to it.

Yonezawa Branch of Gender Equality Office which serves as an office of the Council of Promoting Diversity has opened on the 2nd floor of Engineering Department building No.1. Expert coordinators and counselors will welcome the members of the collaborative institutions and those who are interested in this issue.

Lastly, I would deeply appreciate your understanding and cooperation for making this long-term effort successful and fruitful.
