Faculty of Medicine was established in 1973 as one of the first medical schools to be set up in a plan to have at least one medical school in each prefecture. The purposes of setting up the Faculty of Medicine were to eliminate the shortage of doctors and to raise the standard of medical care in Yamagata Prefecture, and by doing so to contribute to improving the lives of people not only in the prefecture but also nationwide. The Faculty of Medicine comprises the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing. Since its establishment, the faculty has been carrying out education and research with the basic principle of "to foster medical professionals who have broad view and who are capable of learning, thinking and creating things, and then developing them further."
The School of Medicine has been raising many doctors, and educators and researchers in medicine who have sophisticated attainments and skills. Likewise, the School of Nursing has been raising nurses and instructors in nursing who have the comprehension and skills that enable them to deal with the cutting-edge medical technologies that are advancing day by day.
