English (R) aims to help students improve their reading skills.

By the end of course, students will improve basic skills and vocabulary necessary for parsing with accuracy and efficiency logical sentences on a range of topics. They should be able to understand with a good degree of accuracy sentences containing common vocabulary and whose content covers familiar matters such as society, culture and the sciences. They should be able to understand straightforward factual sentences on subjects related to their field of study and personal interests with a satisfactory level of comprehension. In addition, they should be able to identify the main conclusions in clearly signalled argumentative texts.

Students will do various reading related tasks and activities individually, and in pairs and groups. The focus will be on improving reading speed, including skimming and scanning skills, and comprehension strategies. There will also be a practical element where students will be required to discuss the various readings and write summaries and opinions etc. for further reading and discussion.

The reading topics will rotate between news and reports of current events, biographies, and short stories.

Please come to class prepared and on time.

Grades will be determined based on the criteria below.

TOEIC 20%, Midterm evaluation 25%, Final evaluation 25%, Quizzes and Homework 10%, Class participation 20%

*Students missing 1/3 of the classes will automatically receive a final score of‘0’.

There is no required text for this class, but a good electronic dictionary is highly recommended.

This is a practical reading course with a focus on meaning and developing various reading skills.
