From Chikamatsu’s or Mokuami’s dramatic masterpieces to modern classics like Mori Ogai, Kawabata Yasunari, Mishima Yukio: In many Japanese novels or plays (or films), heroes or heroines are featured that have become at least as popular as the literary work itself; the class will concentrate on such pieces, introducing them as films made during the Fifties and Sixties, in which all of our heroes are well presented.

While practicing their English listening and talking abilities, participants get deeper into Japanese literature of various ages.

Japanese literary heroes as seen in films.

Rather than handing in a written report, participants are expected to prepare a short English-speaking presentation on a course-related topic of their own choice along with an accompanying handout for one of the final sessions.

13-15: Presentations
