 担当教員の実務経験の内容(有の場合):Being a native speaker of English, I must use the four-skills of English on a daily basis. However, our class goes beyond just English skills, we are learning to do such things as identify main points, summarize materials and synthesize these materials with other ideas. This is something I must also deal with when conducting workshops, giving presentations at conferences, and presenting material to the students in my classes. Also, having the experience of being a second language learner of Japanese helps me to understand the difficulties that students have in learning a language.

【授業の目的】
This course will focus on learning and practicing conversational English skills by actively discussing various issues. In class, students will use their worksheets to facilitate group discussions. Students should listen to other students’ answers and ask questions or make comments. In the last of class, students will write a reaction paper. In this paper students should write what they learned about the topic and incorporate ideas that they learned from others during the discussions.

1:Expand their ability to listen to short lectures/presentations on a current topics and to respond in writing to questions.2:More readily read and identify the main ideas in articles on relevant current topics and answer questions, both written and oral.3:Broaden their understanding through reading and listening and relate that content to their own lives.4:Formulate questions to use as the basis for spontaneous discussion.5:Effectively use prepared answers to discussion questions to help facilitate discussion.6:Synthesize other group members’ opinions along with their own ideas in written.

・授業の方法
This is a discussion-based course utilizing Internet videos as input about a topic. Students will expand their English vocabulary, improve their English listening and comprehension ability, improve their paragraph writing ability, develop their thinking about topics and discuss them, and improve their general speaking ability.

【学習の方法・準備学修に必要な学修時間の目安】
・受講のあり方
1. Discussions about an assigned topic in groups of 3-4 students
Discussion will be based on videos freely available on the Internet. As homework students will do written preparation and take a comprehension quiz. In the classroom students will discuss the topic with other students and write a brief reaction about the topic and what they learned from other students.
2. Supplementary Activities
Discussion will be based on students’ individual experience and knowledge helping to build more practical conversation skills.
・授業時間外学習(予習・復習)のアドバイス
Carefully read or watch the source material while answering the comprehension questions and then answer the open-ended questions on the preparation worksheet in detail. You should use the entire space provided for your responses to the questions. Please note any questions you have about the source material and ask the teacher at the beginning of class.

【成績の評価】
・基準
Reports must cover the preparation material in detail. Active participation in discussions is a basic requirement. Presentations must be practiced and not an exercise in just “reading”.
・方法
Preparation Worksheet: 30%, Participation in Discussions: 20%, Reaction Writing: 20%, Listening Comprehension Questions: 20%; Final Homework: 10%

There is no required text for this class. All of the source material for this class is freely available on the internet. However, a good electronic dictionary is highly recommended.

This is a practical speaking course with a focus on developing communicative fluency, so you must be prepared to actively participate in the class discussions.
