【授業の目的】
近代日本の文化史に関する文献講読とクラス討論を通じて、日本人の行動や考え方を、近代日本という時代背景の中で理解することを目的とする。
(授業の言語は英語なので、下記の説明もすべて英語となります。)
Since Meiji, lots of new subject matter were used as basis for literary works, as indeed in all of popular culture. In this class, we are going to read some of these writings (English translation attached), watch several films set in the first decades of modern Japan, and discuss their backgrounds, late Meiji to the first years after World War II.

(1)近代日本文化史に関する諸問題を、時代背景と結びつけて理解し、分析することができる。(知識・理解)
(2)主体的な分析を基づき、自分の考えを英語で論理的に説明することができる。(技能)
Scenes of war and peace, urban and rural life, fast change and tradition, things that have been preserved and such that have vanished: Participants will be introduced to some famous and then-famous writers and films, and know both Japanese modern culture and 20th-century developments in their country somewhat better than before.

・授業の方法
Rather than handing in a written report, participants are expected to prepare a short English-speaking presentation on a course-related topic of their own choice along with an accompanying handout for one of the final sessions.

Prints of the stories will be handed out during the class.
