In this class, students will develop their overall communicative ability with an emphasis on speaking. In addition to speaking tasks, other communicative functions such as listening and writing will be included to develop overall skill. Developing students’ communicative ability focusing on speaking.

【授業計画】
・授業の方法
A flipped learning approach by watching videos before the class will be used. Students will be asked to reflect on the material and express their opinion, articulate their point of view and disagree respectfully through roleplays. This class will be using online platforms for learning. In person, students will be asked to engage in various activities using their experiences and realia around them to build fluency. Overall, we will learn basics of news literacy and know how to tell apart news stories from different media outlets and political leaning.

Monday, 5th and 6th period 1st class – Getting to know each other, Quiz on the syllabus 2nd class and 3rd class – Straight News and Feature News 4th and 5th class – Controversial News and Figures. Fake News. 6th and 7th class – Debates and Research 8th class – Debate on a topic chosen by students 9th class and 10th class – American Media and UK Media 11th class and 12th class – News Around the World 12th class and 13th class - Liberal Media and Conservative Media. 【学習の方法・準備学修に必要な学修時間の目安】
・受講のあり方
Students are expected to do independent research on the topic that is coming up next on their own. Using platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. is strongly recommended. In class there will be a good amount of group and pair work based on tasks given by the instructor.
・授業時間外学習(予習・復習)のアドバイス
1.An estimated amount of time for preparation and review of each lesson will be 1.5 hours a week. 2.At the end of each lesson, an assignment will be given to students to promote independent learning (e.g. Watch a video about the topic or read an article). Upon watching the video, students will complete a simple quiz or record a reaction video. 3.Students are required to complete homework assignments, to read the related material to get a better grasp. 4.Students are highly recommended to engage in a preparatory study on the topic to be assigned, making the best of the material in the University library or on the Internet to gather related information and/or examine class handouts. 5.Students are highly recommended to double check the questions solved in class, especially those questions they originally gave incorrect answers to. 6.Students are required to develop the ability to connect multiple pieces of independently learned information as the course progresses. It is highly recommended to review seemingly related parts on the textbook and find out connections. Students are highly recommended to get a better grasp of the topics learned in class by accessing to related material in the University library or on the Internet.

1.The level of students’ independent study before the class. 2.The level of involvement in pair or group discussions in the class. 3.The answers on the mini-quizzes, reaction videos and the presentation. 4.The final speaking exam will be recorded & evaluated. You may be failed if you do not submit more than 30% of your homework.
