This class focuses on using the English skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The goal of this class is to improve your English communication skills, especially speaking and listening, presentation skills, and critical thinking. In the class, we will look at current issues in Japan and across the world and discuss about them.

By taking this class, you will gain confidence in using English to communicate; you will gain knowledge about current issues around the world; you will be able to speak about many topics in various ways.

Course to help students acquire basic English skills.

Each week, students will talk and discuss about a current issue which they read about in an assignment set previously. Students will also give presentations about a current issue they researched about, followed by a discussion.
To support students with TOEIC preparations, there will be a vocabulary quiz every other week.

Week 1: Orientation
Week 2-14: Different current issue each week with assignment and class discussion. Student presentations to be determined.
Week 15: Final class
There will be a vocabulary quiz once every 2 weeks and a writing or speaking assignment due every week.

You are expected to actively participate in class each week and to complete every homework assignment. Additionally, you are required to take the TOEIC test in June/July.

Please study for vocabulary quizzes and complete homework assignments. Be active in group work.

You will be evaluated based on class participation, assignments, vocabulary quizzes, TOEIC test result, and presentations.

Class Participation: 30 pts.
Assignments: 15 pts.
Vocabulary quizzes: 15 pts.
Presentations: 20 pts.
TOEIC: 20pts.

I hope that through this class, you can learn to USE English, using what you already know but may have forgot. I hope you can also learn about the world around us so that you can engage with the world in the future. Communication can be easy once you try!
