【授業の目的】
Introduction to Intercultural Communication
This course will take a wide approach to understanding culture by covering IC theory and important cultural and historical people and events that have shaped US and Japanese society. Students will participate in lectures, give presentations and write short essays.
【授業の到達目標】
The goals of the course will be the following:
1) to understand how the communication process differs among cultures 2) to develop a practical understanding of how culture underpins our behavior 3) to gain some understanding of how culture is a tool affecting communication 4) to recognize ethnocentrism and cultural relativity 5) to develop a greater sensitivity to cultural differences 6) to give students more confidence in giving English presentations and giving opinions in English

A-1.ミニッツペーパー、リフレクションペーパー等によって、自分の考えや意見をまとめ、文章を記述し提出する機会がある。:1~25% B-2.事前学習(下調べ、調査等含む)をした上で、他の学生の意見を尊重しつつグループとしての結論を出すために議論をする機会がある。:26~50% C-2.事前学習(下調べ、調査等含む)をした上で、プレゼンテーションを行い、互いに質疑応答や議論を行う機会がある。:1~25%
【科目の位置付け】
This course is designed to help students acquire the ability to logically analyze communication problems from the perspective of cultural knowledge and propose solutions. In addition, it is desirable for learners to have an advanced level of English before taking this class.

Students should actively participate in class discussions and read the material outside of class.
・授業時間外学習(予習・復習)のアドバイス
This is an EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) course. Therefore, students are expected to have a good command of English, especially in listening and writing (e.g. TOEIC 525+).

・基準
Students must be able to independently consider and discuss the cultural concepts or theory indicated in the course goals based on the knowledge and experience gained through the course.

Grading will be based on the following criteria:
Class participation: 10% Essay Exams: 50% Oral presentations: 40%
