 担当教員の実務経験の内容(有の場合):I have been teaching English at the University level since 2008. Before that I was a Ph.D. student at Tohoku University and later a PostDoctoral Fellow for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Because of my background, I teach English using an "academic" approach, simplifying concepts using the idea of "models" and focusing on understanding rather than memorizing.

【授業の目的】
Student’s overall practical English abilities will be developed while putting emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking fluency.

【授業の到達目標】
Students have little difficulty in expressing themselves about routine topics and can participate in short, daily conversations. Students can understand reasonably long utterances if spoken slowly and clearly.

・授業の方法
This class will be conducted face to face and students will work on material provided by the teacher. Listening and speaking practices will be done using academic topics (in Science and Humanities).

第2回: Note-taking while listening (videos on "the water crisis").
第3回: Note-taking while listening (videos on "natural resources").
第4回: Note-taking while listening (videos on "evolution").
第5回: Introduction to oral summaries.
第6回: Oral presentations based on Lessons 2-5.
第7回: Oral presentations based on Lessons 2-5.
第8回: Mid Term Examination.
第9回: Introduction to interrogatives and giving opinions (argumentative writing and speaking).
第10回: Closed and open questions (part I).
第11回: Closed and open questions (part II).
第12回: Phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions.
第13回: Oral presentations based on Lessons 9-13.
第14回: Oral presentations based on Lessons 9-13.
第15回: Final Examination

【学習の方法・準備学修に必要な学修時間の目安】
・受講のあり方
Students will work on material given in class. Class discussions, group work and presentations will be the basis to practice learned skills. Special lectures will be also provided with explanations and review of targeted English skills.
・授業時間外学習(予習・復習)のアドバイス
Completion of the activities for each week will be done during class hours and extracurricular hours (assignments) as instructed by the teacher. An estimated amount of time to be spent on completion, preparation and review of each lesson will be 1 hour a week.

【成績の評価】
・基準
Students will be evaluated based on achieving the goals of the class using the following criteria:

1- Students have understood the set of skills presented in the course.
2- Students are able to apply learned skills in activities other than those in the materials given in class (e.g. quizzes, exam questions, etc.)
3- Students show sufficient commitment to learning by participating in the course activities (class participation, presentations, Exams.)

【テキスト・参考書】
No textbook will be used in this class. Materials will be provided by the teacher.
E-learning software has been chosen to support TOEIC® preparation as part of English 1 studies. This study software offers practice and learning in all fields of English language study, including vocabulary, expressions and grammar. We suggest continued progress, completing a few lessons on a weekly basis.

Students are advised to use an English-English dictionary throughout the course, and bring their own PC to the classroom.
