Specialization History of the Japanese Buddhism
History of the cities of medieval Japan
Class Outline I specialize in the history of Japanese Buddhism and the history of the cities of medieval Japan, in particular Kamakura as a medieval city. When I told you that I specialize in the history of Japanese Buddhism and that of the cities of medieval Japan, some of you might have thought that the above two themes seem completely unrelated.
However actually, they are closely related. In particular, the so-called new Kamakura Buddhism ,that has been dominant in Japan, was started and developed in medieval cities such as Heian-Kyo (present Kyoto) and Kamakura, and I think this particular Buddhism was primarily for the salvation of urban dwellers. I will focus on this new Kamakura Buddhism and Kamakura as a medieval city in my class.
