This course serves as an introduction to the history of modern Japan from the late Tokugawa years to the early 1910s. The topics of inquiry include major historical events, important personalities, modes of thought and cultural/social trends that characterize the Tokugawa and Meiji periods as distinct epochs in Japanese history. By participating in this course, you are going to learn the basic vocabulary and concepts that are necessary to examine Tokugawa and Meiji Japan as historical subjects. The final exam requires you to construct your own narrative of Japan's emergence as a unique modern state.
