Report on FY17 Short-Term Stay Program for South American Students

A Short-Term Stay Program for South American Students was conducted from July 31st to August 14th, and 10 students from 3 Andean countries visited Yamagata and Tokyo.  From Peru, UNMSM, UNALM and UNI sent students for the first time, so now, all six SA partner universities participate in our program.  Participants also joined the DTP Activity Review Meeting on August 10th and made presentations along with past members of DTP.  The following are their activity reports.

July 31st (Mon.)

Arrive at Yamagata

August 1st (Tue.) – 2nd (Wed.)  At Kojirakawa

Orientation and lectures by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the Faculty of Education, Art and Science.  Visit to Bunsho-kan (the former Yamagata Prefectural Office Building), the Yamagata Prefectural Museum, and the Yamagata Museum of Science and Industry.  Courtesy call on the President of Yamagata University, Dr. Kiyohito Koyama.  Welcome party organized by Kojirakawa-campus students.

August 4th (Thu.) – 5th (Sat.) At Yonezawa

Lectures by the Faculty of Engineering on "the Great East Japan Earthquake and Volunteer Activities", “the Japanese Welfare System” and “the History of the Faculty of Engineering”.  Participation in Open Campus 2017.  Visit to NEC Personal Computer (NECP), the Innovation Center of Organic Electronics (INOEL), the Smart MIRAI House, an elderly care center called Yuinoki, Uesugi Museum and Uesugi Shrine.  Cooking class at the Yonezawa University of Nutrition Sciences.  Welcome party organized by Yonezawa students.

August 6th (Sun.) – 8th (Tue.) At Tsuruoka

Travel from Yonezawa to Tsuruoka. Visit to Matsugaoka Kaikonjo and other sites in Kushibiki.  Lectures by the Faculty of Agriculture and NIT Tsuruoka College.  Visit to the Tsuruoka City Sewage & Waste Treatment Plant. Factory tour at Yorozu Engineer Co.  Welcome party organized by Tsuruoka campus students.

Stay at Farmers’ Pension – Students used electronic dictionaries to actively communicate with the family.

Visit to the Tsuruoka City Waste Treatment Plant – Students received an explanation at the control center.

Welcome party organized by Tsuruoka campus students – Attended not only Japanese but also by students from other Asian countries as well.

Factory tour at Yorozu Engineering Co. – Students learned about the strengths of Japanese manufacturing.

August 9th (Wed.) – 10th (Thu.)

Travel from Tsuruoka to Yamagata. Visit to the Kamo Aquarium.  Wrap-up and work shop at Kojirakawa.  DTP Activity Review Meeting and Farewell party.

Aug 11th (Fri.)

Visit to the Otokoyama Winery and Sony Energy Devices Co.  Travel from Yamagata to Tokyo.

Factory tour at Sony Energy Devices Co. – Students view the production process of products made from lithium seen at the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia.

August 12th (Sat.) – 13th (Sun.) In Tokyo

Visit to the National Museum of Nature and Sciences (Ueno), Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Sky Tree, the National Museum of Engineering Science and Innovation (Miraikan) and the Festival of Fukagawa Hachiman.

August 14th (Mon.)

Travel from Tokyo to Narita.  Depart Narita to their home countries.
