▲Teaching children in Nepal how to cope with disaster
The Professional School of Education of Yamagata University has required students to take the course on school safety and disaster prevention training since its foundation in 2009. Teachers-to-be students need to have knowledge on disaster prevention and disaster management capability in order to protect children's lives and prepare schools to serve as disaster prevention centers for the community in case of emergency. After experiencing the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the subject became more important than ever and there have an increased need of revising and improving the disaster management in schools and disaster prevention education. Professor MURAYAMA Yoshiyuki of the Professional School of Education has supported disaster prevention education not only in Japan but also overseas such as Nepal, where sediment disasters often happen in steep mountains. Collaborating with Professor YAGI Hiroshi of the Faculty of Education, Art and Science and with the help of the local graduate school students, the Nepalese picture-story was created and performed for the local elementary school students to teach how to cope with disaster situation.
