Opera as Comprehensive Performing Arts

My specialty area is vocal music and, especially, opera. I have successfully improved education of students by incorporating operas in my lectures. Opera is a form of comprehensive performing arts, in which players sing and act. It may look difficult, but once you get spotlighted on the stage in costume and makeup, you'd realize how pleasant and fun it is!

Opera and Outreaching

The musical art course has Outreaching class for sophomores and juniors. It is like home delivery of music as students visit local kindergartens, elementary schools, hospitals and elderly care facilities to conduct musical performances. They sing and play instruments, and are also involved in planning and management of such performances. Opera is especially popular among their performances and played every year at the city's kindergartens and elementary schools.

Opera for Human Development

Opera also has excellent capabilities as an educational program. Students prepare for their annual main opera held in March for more than a year. They have their own particular assignments, such as management, music and acting, and negotiate with local people who cooperate in executing the performance. Students can achieve outstanding personal and musical progresses. Such environment was behind a feat of Miss Megumi Matsuura, then our junior, to win the top position among university students in the Tokyo International Vocal Music Competition held in 2012.
