In the age of super-graying society, Japan needs to develop products to support cutting-edge medicine for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease in its effort to build the world's top healthy longevity society. Medical products are made from various materials, and materials with less foreign body reaction are necessary for the surface that comes into contact with the human body.
We have synthesized a new safe material that does not coagulate the blood upon contact. This resulted in the development of a medical product that commands the top share of the world market.
We are manufacturing a system that allows direct observation of the contact surface of cells and materials. We are trying to make design guidelines for new medical materials by understanding the mechanism of cell adhesion.
We are developing technology for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the No. 1 cause of death. We have synthesized a material that can control the adhesion of cancer cells with normal cells and stem cells without the use of anticancer drugs. We are now making productization effort with a business.
Interdisciplinary cooperation is indispensable to the future development of good products. We are promoting cooperation with the Faculties of Medicine and Science and interchange with researchers of other fields. International exchange is also active.
