Exploring Strategies for Discourse Understanding

ProfessorJapanese linguistics

WATANABE Fumio

My expertise lies in Japanese linguistics, specifically researching the differences in communication strategies between native Japanese speakers and Japanese language learners.

One of my research themes involves analyzing lecture comprehension strategies employed by native Japanese speakers and learners based on their note-taking processes. It is thought that while listening to lectures, individuals selectively record information in their notes, focusing on what they perceive to be essential. By analyzing both the discourse of lectures and the process of note-taking, I aim to clarify on what clues participants of lectures determine what information is important and anticipate the lecture progression. Such clues may include expressions related to discourse development, known as metalinguistic expressions, as well as repetitions of words.

Furthermore, I aim to utilize the findings obtained from comparing the note-taking processes of native Japanese speakers and learners to enhance listening comprehension instruction in Japanese language education.

I use an app on tablets to record the note-taking process for analysis.
