Transforming difficult-to-understand ultrasound echoes into clear images with the power of AI

Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering

At Yamagata University’s Center for AI Design Education and Research, research is being conducted on AI using deep learning systems. In the Yanagida Laboratory, we are advancing research aimed at visualizing the conditions within the measurement area based on acoustic signals obtained through ultrasonic sensing. However, traditional ultrasound images often have low resolution and may exhibit artifacts due to multiple reflections, making it challenging to interpret internal conditions without prior experience.

To address this issue, the Yanagida Laboratory is developing a neural network that pairs ultrasound images with high-resolution X-ray CT images to create more intuitive representations.

Furthermore, we are also researching a new AI-designed image reconstruction operator that generates clear X-ray CT-like images directly from the acoustic signals obtained through ultrasonic measurements, rather than relying on the matrix calculations used in traditional image reconstruction operators.
