Examining and researching neurological diseases that are increasing in an aging society

In neurology, we examine all internal medicine diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles, which include dementia and strokes, that are increasing in our aging society. We examine a wide range of neurological diseases at the Yamagata University Department of Neurology. Now, we are mainly researching neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease. Shedding light on neurological diseases can help us to understand the brain and nerves.

Using a variety of new research methods

In basic research, we generate various genetically modified mice depending on our findings of novel genetic mutations from patients of neurological disease, and analyze the mice to find the novel pathology and therapy in neurological diseases, including dementia and Parkinson's disease. In clinical research, we are conducting studies on patients and local residents using new analytical instruments and methods.

Conducting research with an international perspective, and using English in daily activities

In order to conduct research that is well-regarded internationally, it is necessary to read English research papers in daily activities, and gain new knowledge from around the world. At the Yamagata University Department of Neurology, we use medical English daily during examinations, and we present and discuss our findings in English at our weekly research meetings, conducting activities with an international perspective.
