Area Campus Mogami

The Area Campus Mogami of Yamagata University was launched in 2005 in response to a long-cherished wish of the area for access to higher education. Mogami, one of the four administrative divisions in Yamagata Prefecture, is a sparsely populated area mainly consisting of farming and mountain villages, most of which are designated as depopulated communities under the law of Special Measures of Promoting the Independence of Depopulated Communities. The campus is unique in a sense that it specializes in fieldwork with no educational or research facilities in it as we regard the whole Mogami community as a university campus. Courses are designed and taught by our Mogami campus faculty who are local residents qualified to lecture in the topics related to the area. These credit-bearing service learning courses are quite popular among students at Yamagata University.
